Chapter11

CJ put on a nice shirt and slacks. Not a suit, but this was Tory’s opening. She hadn’t invited him, but he was going anyway. He’d missed her.

She’d stayed away and he understood, but this was business. He’d helped her and he wanted to see the fruits of his efforts. He may not get a chance to talk to her, but he would at least be there to support her.

The bakery was hopping. This location offered better pedestrian traffic. This was her grand opening. The bakery had been operating for a week. CJ had watched Tory go off to work early each morning, wanting to talk to her.

He refused to stay away from this event. She needed to know he was on her side.

A young girl greeted him with a tray of samples at the door. “Welcome to Sweet Stuff. Would you like to try a sample?”

CJ’s mouth watered. He’d eat the whole tray if he could. He smiled at the teenager. “Thanks. Do you know where Tory is?”

“She’s probably in the back. She’s putting the last minute touches on a cake.”

“Thanks.”

He put the confection in his mouth, and his eyes almost fell closed. This was even better than some of her stuff at the other bakery. Maybe whoever burned down her place had done her a favor. She’d gotten more inventive.

Customers occupied every table. CJ found himself a spot at a counter along the outside wall. He sipped the coffee someone had handed him. He wasn’t one for flavored brews, but this wasn’t bad. He surveyed the room.

Many people chatted. He knew the moment Tory came out of the kitchen. He’d never been so aware of someone. Why was that? He didn’t really want to know.

She looked good. In her element as she greeted her customers one by one. She laughed with them. They laughed with her. She was very personable. This was certainly a side he’d never seen.

His mouth watered with the thought of her back in his bed. She was going to be there. Lawsuit be damned. She belonged in his bed.

She finally reached him. Her eyes didn’t have the same light to them, but he didn’t care. He’d put it back there.

“Hi.”

“You came,” she said.

“I like to see what I’ve helped produce.”

“Right.”

Her smile dimmed a little. He reached out to touch her. “I came for you, too, Tory.”

“Thanks. I’m not supposed to talk to you.”

The idea clearly pained her. Her brow knit.

“I haven’t done anything wrong.”

“I know that, but I can’t be sure. This is my brother we’re talking about. Something happened that day. He’s no longer here, and I have to put everything else aside to find out what that was.”

“I understand the lawsuit, Tory. I wouldn’t dream of asking you to drop it. I’m just here to support you.” CJ looked around the place. “Looks like you have a lot of that.”

“The mayor made an announcement on my behalf. He’s here somewhere. He’s a big supporter of small businesses,” she said.

A hair fell out of her pony tail, and CJ’s fingers itched to brush it aside.
